Hypertension?

My mom has never had high blood pressure and it does not run in our family. of course with age everything changes. Anyway, last week she started having chest pains and felt sick to her stomach. She has had numbness in her fingers that woke her up and the chest pain has actually woken her up. She went to the doctors yesterday because she was still experiencing chest pain and her blood pressure which is usually 118 over some low number was now 160/100! Very shocked the doc put her on a EKG monitor and then gave her nitro and baby asprin then got her pressure down to 90/70 (i think) and she was sent to the hospital. At the hospital and at rest and no stress her pressure raised to 158/100 again she is feeling heavy chested and was still having pains last night. She is going for a stress test first thing this morning. I was just wondering if this was a severe case of hypertension or perhaps something else is going on? Just a concerned daughter

woo, that’s really high blood pressure. did your mother use to check her tension before? if she did, and it was normal, maybe it’s not hypertension, and the high blood pressure is just temporary and due to some other problem. your mother has to start measuring her blood pressure daily, and if she does have hypertension, she will have to take drugs to bring it down, cut on salt, etc. i do hope she is better by now, and that she doesn’t have anything serious.

Pain can cause elevated blood pressures but also cardiac events. Also, getting closer to menopause can now cause the blood pressure to elevate. Hopefully, the stress test today will give you answers whether she is having some cardiac problems or not. If she is not, I would guess a blood pressure pill along with recommendations for dieting and starting an exercise program will come along with this.
