Is there a difference between hypertensive crisis and rebound hypertension?

summation asked:

I understand hypertensive crisis applies to MAOIs and Tricyclics; rebound hypertension applies to ACE inhibitors, but aren’t the effects much the same? Am I missing some info here on the difference besides the drugs that cause these effects?

Hypertensive crisis is the state of elevated blood pressure with acute end-organ damage, with a presumed cause-and-effect relationship. Rebound hypertension is just a return to elevated levels (or perhaps a bit above) after withdrawal of treatment, and may be asymptomatic.

hypertensive crisis is just the term used to describe when your BP is so elevated that it becomes a medical emergency. 200/110 qualifies. also the presence of symptoms like headaches, dizziness, chest pains, or difficulty breathing would put you in that category. there can be many causes of hypertensive crisis. as you mentioned, the MAOIs in conjunction with various other medications can cause it.

rebound hypertension is simply the phenomena that occurs with abrupt withdrawl of chronically used anti-hypertensive medications, especially with beta blockers. if the rebound hypertension causes your BP to go high enough, then you can be in hypertensive crisis as well as having rebound hypertension.

the two terms are entirely different.
