I’m a 20 year old male with a blood pressure of 125/85. Am I at risk of getting hypertension?

I work out 3x a week and I’m at my ideal body weight. I’m not overweight. I have heard a lot about the normals being 120/80 but mine has been in 125/85 for a while.

That just maybe normal for you prehypertesion sets in at 130/90 so you’re okay…just keep a good check on it.

Yes. The standards have recently been changed. The goal is now to get your pressure below 120/80. 120-139/80-90 is now considered prehypertension.

Try a lower salt diet to prevent retention of sodium and water. A mild diuretic would also help you to expel some sodium and water.

No, it is within the range of normal blood pressure. Maybe you take your blood pressure right after eating or exercising? That could help your blood pressure to rise.

probably not, mate. your blood pressure moves up and down a little bit, all day, everyday, the same way your heart rate does. consequently you can’t make a really great assessment from a single reading unless it’s scarily high or low. the standard 120/80 is an accepted number, but in reality there is a spectrum of what is considered normal.

there have been many guidelines published, and in recent years it has been agreed that certain patients with particular conditions benefit from really pretty tight BP control (135/85 in diabetics etc). in reality, in patients with serious medical conditions, running their BP on the lower side of normal is a good thing provided they can cope with it well and don’t become a bit wobbly or dizzy.

as a fit young male with no medical conditions a BP of 125/85 is absolutely normal. if it drifts up one day, watch over the next few to make sure it comes back down. if it stays higher, it would probably be a good idea to get it checked out. it’s good that you’re keeping an eye on these things - keep up the good work!
